REIGATE

Cliff Michelmore - Reigate
Well let's get this over with then... Reigate's most famous ex-resident, Cliff Michelmore and his actress/presenter wife Jean Metcalf! Yippee!
Born 1919 on the Isle of Wight - Star of 'Holiday', 'Tonight' and countless other famous programs that old people have forgotten, Michelmore returned to the BBC on 18 November 2007 to introduce a special programme commemorating the 1967 devaluation of the Pound on BBC Parliament. Cliff's son, Guy Michelmore who grew up in Reigate is a Hollywood composer, composing soundtracks to many blockbusters.
Cliff has since moved from the White House to Hampshire but he loves coming back and walking about Reigate thinking about where he's going to go on his holidays.

David Walliams - born David Williams on 20th August 1971. The slightly camp David Walliams stars in Little Britain with Matt Lucas and went to Reigate Grammar School where he first started acting. One of Walliams's earliest television jobs was in BTV, which was part of 'Gamesworld' on Sky One (broadcast at 6pm sometime around '94-95) where he appeared in various roles each week. He used to present a children's programme called 'Incredible Games' (BBC 2, 1995) and one of David's claims to fame was that he was a scriptwriter for 'Ant and Dec' and 'Run the Risk', but he was too ashamed to tell anyone. David revisited Reigate Grammar School in 2005 with his co-star Matt Lucas to talk to the pupils about his work in comedy where they were well recieved.

Clips of some of David's funniest moments: Clip One, Clip Two

Ray Mears - Reigate

Ray Mears - born 1964, the man that everyone wants to be on a deserted island with - catching the dinner and making the bed out of palm leaves - bushman, survivor and local hero, Ray grew up in the Reigate area and learnt his tracking and survival skills on the North Downs.
After attending Reigate Grammar school of which Ray says his chemistry teacher 'wrote the most boring textbook ever', he established a local bushcraft and woodlore business at just 19. Learning from his Judo teacher at school, using his mantra, ‘Maximum efficiency from minimum effort,’ Ray honed his skills to survive just with the nature around him and is the most recognised expert in the bushcraft field today. Ray still runs his bushcraft business, holds survival holidays in remote places such as the Rainforests and encourages everyone to see that the worlds resources are all we need and cannot be wasted, even teaching indigenous people how to use their environment more effectively. Ray Alan and Lord Charles - Reigate
Ray Alan (and Lord Charles) - born 1930, Greenwich. Living in Chart Lane, Reigate (discovered by my Dad reading his gas meter!), Ray is probably the best ventriloquist in the world and has been entertaining the world for longer than most people would imagine. Starring with greats such as Laurel and Hardy, Bob Hope, Jack Benny and of course his alchoholic buddy Lord Charles. Ray continues to entertain and amuse with comedy and magic on cruises such as the QEII and QMII to places such as the Carribean, lucky guy.

A hero in our mist.

Here's a clip of Ray getting hassled by a man in a gorilla suit with some terrible music and equally terrible gags: Clip One

Norman Cook aka Fat Boy Slim real name Quentin Leo Cook (!) - born 1963, Kent.
Norman went to Reigate Grammar School and Reigate College many years ago and hung around the area writing articles for a magazine he developed at college.

Liquid Gold - Dancing Reigate dizzy
Liquid Gold - Remember them? They did the catchy disco songs 'Dance Yourself dizzy' and the excellent "Substitute". Ray Knott (bass player) and Ellie Hope (singer) both left of the picture, are both married and own the Knotts Pine shop at the end of the high Street.

Newton Faulkner born Sam Newton Battenberg Faulkner, 1985 in Reigate. He is well known for his distinctive guitar playing style, which involves percussive use of the guitar's body, and unusual fingerstyle picking techniques. Tony offers lovely meals to the people of Reigate who can afford them and the restaurant has been claimed to be one of the finest restaurants in Surrey.

In 1965 he emigrated to Australia, working on several newspapers. In 1978 he returned to the UK more permanently, taking a job with The Sun. There's proof that Kavanagh came from Reigate, as he grew up a staunch Thatcherite, but became disillusioned and turned to the red side!
It was Kavannagh in 2003 who claimed that George Galloway was an "employee of Saddam 's sadistic state machine" and that he stole "£375,000-a-year from the impoverished Iraqi people." These allegations have been dismissed as either inaccurate or without proof when brought to court. Any way, another famous resident of Reigate.

Andrew Collins - Redhill

In television, Andrew Collins has been a scriptwriter for Family Affairs and EastEnders and finds it hard to say no when asked to be a talking head on all those Top 100 programmes (apparently has been on 37 of them which he promises will stop soon!). A clip of Andrew Collins doing what is does best, a talking head on one of 'those' programs: Clip One

His first two records were driving a racing car manufactured by the Sunbeam Car Company in Wolverhampton. He set his final land speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah on September 3, 1935, and was the first person to drive an automobile over 300 miles per hour (301.337 mph).

Lord J. Arthur Rank - Reigate
Lord J. Arthur Rank - born in Hull, 1888-1972.

'The Man With The Gong' (not the one that actually hit it before the start of his films) and proclaimed saviour of the British film industry, once lived on Reigate Heath. Rank entered the film industry attempting to further his Methodist faith's aims by making various religious films. Over a short amount of time he owned studios, laboratories, Odeon cinemas (one standing near Redhill station years ago), hotels, bingo and copying machines amongst other businesses.
Arthur had his chain of restaurants, unfortuantely named 'Rank' restaurants, they soon died out!
Sherlock Holmes - Reigate
Sherlock Holmes I know I know, 'he doesn't exist!' I hear you cry, but I'm sticking with this... Sherlock once stayed with his mate in Reigate!!

Check out the story »
Charlie - Reigate

'Charlie' the parrot aged over 105. Now then, this bird has managed to build up for herself many controversies. Charlie is said to be the oldest bird in Britain and she was bought by Peter Oram who owns the Reigate Heath Nurseries. Peter claims the bird once belonged to Winston Churchill although Peter bought her from a pet shop in 1965 (when Churchill died). The bird has caused her owners many problems with her constant need to swear! Churchill's relatives have since stated that he never owned the macaw but an african grey, I'm sure Peter will say different!

We're not too sure that Charlie was ever Churchill's parrot but pretty convinced here at Reigate and Redhill.co.uk that Charlie was the same bird in Reigate's old pet shop Gay Dogs, now that shop is a legacy in itself...

Rumours, misconceptions and general sillyness...

Contrary to popular belief, Spike Milligan never lived near Reigate, it was his Grandfather who lived in Woodhatch.

Dame Judy Dench
lives near Outwood, nowhere near Redhill.

Dispite the fan club address for Gerard Butler, Scottish actor best known as the sparsely clothed Spartan in the film 300,
being a Reigate address, this is just a forwarding post box and does not connect Gerard at all with Reigate.

Harrods boss and former arms dealer's assistant, Mohammed Al Fayed, lived/lives in his mansion near Tandridge, not Reigate.

'I saw Bob Holness (host of 'Blockbusters') collecting his dry cleaning the other day.'

'Mia Farrow and Andre Previn also lived for a while in Reigate (well close by in Leigh actually) I think it was in the late 60's.'

'Barry Sheen the motorbike racer used to live in Leigh near Reigate.'

'Dick Crippen of tenpole tudor and king kurt fame lived in Doods Road.'

Know any one else???

REDHILL

Bernard Bresslaw - Redhill
Bernard Bresslaw - born in 1934 in Stepney, East London - Star of countless Carry On films, Hawk the Slayer and British sex symbol, Bernard has lived in Redhill and graced our Redhill streets. More than likely he left 'cause he couldn't see the funny side to it any more. Bernard sadly died in 1993 of a heart attack.

A clip of Bernard from Carry On with a bad wig: Clip One
Ronnie Biggs - Redhill
Ronnie Biggs - born in Lambeth on August 8, 1929, lived in Alpine Road, Redhill before he went 'dahn' as an outlaw and Britians Most Wanted Man. He was involved in the Great Train Robbery in 1963, escaped to Rio, now caught and returned and nearly dead. Apparently his dying wish is to be taken around the places he grew up. So Alpine Road, expect a visit from the Boys soon... Oh, and my ex-secretary's Aunt used to breed his Cavelier puppies.
Katie Melua - Redhill
Katie Melua - born in Georgia, Russia in 1984. The smokey, sultry voiced singer/guitarist lived/lives in Redhill where her family lives now (who'd have guessed ha?).
Her album, Call Off The Search reached number one in the album charts and went multi platinum. Apparently she finds miming offensive and loves to greet musicians walking around town holding guitar cases, so you know what to do next time if you want to meet her when you're popping into Woolworths.

Probably our most famous present Redhill resident yet!
About Redhill, Katie said to a magazine back in 2005, "It's good to be back in Redhill. I've really never left here, it's where all my family lives."

Here's a clip of Katie being dragged through a hedge backwards: Clip One
Michael Greco - Redhill

Michael 'Beppe' Greco - Gravel voiced star of Eastenders (Beppe) and London musical Chicago, Greco seems to be Redhill's most famous person as he's everyones cousin or friend from St Bedes School which he attended. Well he's the cousin of a bloke I used to work with anyway (heh Vinny?).

Apparently Greco also attended Reigate 6th Form College and was voted #1 most fanciable male during Fashion Week (1985-87).

Jimmy White snooker player - Redhill crowd favourite.

Jimmy White – born May 2nd 1962, Tooting. Jimmy ‘Whirlwind’ White remains the most exciting snooker player alive and many people can remember rooting for him when snooker used to be interesting. Crowd favourite, amassing over £4,000 000 in prize money (most spent on booze and high living) will be famous as the man who never won the World Snooker Championship, even though coming close so many times ('go on Jimmy!'). Seen in Redhill town and on Redhill train station many times in the 1990’s, Jimmy often visited the town to settle his debts with the banks during his bankruptcy. Maybe his new passion of Poker (ranked 70th best English poker player) may help him keep up his payments on his Epsom mansion. Anyway, Jimmy has expressed an interest to be involved in The Reigate Cardroom poker and bridge club.

Here's Jimmy showing his whirlwind ball skills and why he is Britain's most loved snooker player: Short Clip One - crazy spin to beat Kirk Stevens  :  Long Clip Two - 147 break

no egg on this face, Eggwina Currie - Redhill
Edwina Currie - born in Liverpool and apparently went to the same school as Beatles George Harrison and Paul McCartney. Eggwina was famous for her 'close association' with a major MP and her infamous Salmonella egg scare. Eggy resigned after farmers nearly rioted over the affair (the eggs). She had an office in Merstham called 'The Other Place,' based on the association with the nickname of the House of Lords. Eggy has often been involved in opening restaurants and other stuff in Reigate and Redhill and once saw Captain Corelli's Mandolin with me at the Screen! Edwina Currie now lives with her husband in a converted barn in South Nutfield.

If your fascination of her can't constrain itself any longer, then check out her own website!

She is most notable for appearing as an eight year old child in the central image of the iconic United Kingdom television Test Card F (developed by her late father George Hersee, an engineer for the BBC in 1967 where the X in the middle of the card being used as a centering device for old TV screens), along with her clown 'Bubbles' who she keeps in a box! Carole is in the Guinness Book Of Records as the person who has appeared on television for more hours than anyone else - an estimated total of 70,000 hours, equivalent to nearly eight years. She was paid only £100 for this by the BBC and still has to pay her license fee. Carole became a seamstress and has created costumes for several West End theatre productions and film productions including Flash Gordon and Dangerous Liaisons.
An article about Carole Hersee can be read here: Telegraph article on Carole Hersee

I spotted Peter a long time ago back in the 1990's in Sainsburys and he was often seen walking around Redhill where he used to live, apparently near Doynings.

Here's a clip of Peter Howitt in a classic clip of Bread: Clip One

Maybe Gareth Hunt will be most remembered for his magic coffee bean hand shake trick for Nescafé adverts in the 1980's.
Sadly, Gareth suffered a heart attack whilst starring in a pantomime in Bournemouth in December 1999. He then suffered and died from pancreatic cancer on 14 March 2007 at age 65 at his home in Redhill.

Here's a tribute to Gareth charming the ladies and being a proper English gent as Mike Gambit in The New Advengers: Clip One

Near fame at last.

Here's David Hewlett talking about his role as Rodney McKay in Stargate: Clip One

Roy Lynes - Redhill

Roy Alan Lynes (left of photograph) - born 1943, Redhill, was the original keyboardist and occasional singer with Status Quo (originally The Spectres then Traffic Jam).
He appeared on Status Quo's first three albums, and wrote "To Be Free", the B-side of the second Quo single, "Black Veils of Melancholy".
According to the group's producer John Schroeder, Lynes was 'the quietest member of the group' and 'somehow always seemed to be the odd one out'. He left the group in 1970 when he fell in love whilst on tour, claiming that he could see how serious the other band members were about fame and glory, and that he just wanted to settle down to a life with his new found love. Rick Parfitt said Roy was 'a bit laid back, the Open University type who liked tinkering and finding out about things,' and Francis Rossi remarked that he showed up at a gig they were playing in New Zealand about ten years later to say hello; 'He seemed a much happier bloke.' He now lives in Australia and has lately been touring with his Quo tribute band and on his own.

Derek has had many documentaries and TV spots about him and Derek Paravicini's official biography, In the Key of Genius  by Adam Ockelford, was published in the UK by Hutchinson on May 3 , 2007. You can see a documentary on Derek here: Clip One

Alfred Nobel - Redhill

Alfred Nobel - born 1833, Stockholm, Sweden. Of course, Alfred Nobel never lived here but he would have sure been a guest of a resident of Redhill or at least spent some time in the town having in 1867, successfully demonstrated dynamite for the first time at a quarry in Redhill.

The chemist patented his mixture that year and after the test, news about the compound spread across the world. Nobel said that the new combination was "far more safe and convenient for transportation, storage, and use, than nitro-glycerine... without losing the great explosive power of nitroglycerine."  More about Alfred: Alfred Nobel Wikipedia article

Nick Terry - Redhill
Nick Terry - I know we're scrapping the barrel a bit, but four times champion of TV quiz show Fifteen-To-One and winner of the Whitaker's Almanack Champions' Challenge in 1999, BA pilot from Redhill has got a place on Reigate and Redhill, it doesn't take much does it?
